THE LAST SUPPER
The Last Supper, by Leonardo da Vinci, is on the wall of the refectory at the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in Milan. To see the picture you need to book well ahead by phoning the official ticket office and choosing a slot (see 'find out more'). You can book visits via a tour operator but you will pay extra for the privilege. Some of the slots come with a guide, who tells you more about the picture. However, I'd definitely recommend that you don't take up this option (read Road School to find out why!) Access to the picture is strictly limited - only a handful of people can see it at a time, and only for 15 minutes. You enter the refectory via a kind of airlock, and you are not allowed to take photographs inside, which is why I can't add any pictures of the painting to this page! (I've included a picture from a great pizza restaurant we went to in Milan, instead.) The Last Supper itself is truly breathtaking. Although it is heavily restored, you can still sense the aura of Leonardo's artistic genius, emanating from it. FIND OUT MORE |
