THE LEANING TOWER OF PISA
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is obviously one of the 'must see' locations that you simply have to visit if you are going to Tuscany. I was expecting to be disappointed by it, and to find the area around the Tower overcrowded with tourists, but we were pleasantly surprised at how lovely and unspoilt it was (once you get past all the tourist stalls outside). The Tower is in a large, green open square called the Campo dei Miracoli, which means the Field of Miracles. There are three other buildings in the Cathedral complex, and lots of green space around them where you could stop for a picnic on a sunny day. As you'd expect, there are plenty of chances to buy souvenirs or to eat lunch near the Tower, but the busy tourist stalls are all outside the Campo, so they don't impinge on your enjoyment when visiting the site. You can go up to the top of the Leaning Tower, but it is best to book tickets ahead of time, as visitor numbers are limited. If you visit, make sure to take a photo of yourself or your kids, holding up the Tower. You will easily be able to figure out where to stand to take your photo, as you will see lots of tourists doing exactly the same thing. FIND OUT MORE |
