FORBIDDEN CITY
The Forbidden City is located just opposite Tian'an Men Square. Officially known as The Palace Museum, it is a vast complex of gates, bridges, halls, palaces and gardens. It was completed in 1420, and was home to the imperial emperors until the abdication in 1912. Inside the City you can see stunning statues of strange mythical creatures, beautifully painted wooden halls, with intricately carved ceilings, and some lovely gardens with bizarre grottoes. There is very little shade in the City, so remember to take a hat. As you exit, if you climb up the hill in nearby Jing Shan Park, you get the most amazing view back over the entire Forbidden City.
