VENICE
You can't really drive through Italy and not take the time to visit Venice. However, it's expensive to stay in the city itself, and parking in Venice is nigh on impossible, so we booked accommodation on the spit of land that encloses the lagoons, an area known as Cavallino-Treporti. On this spit of land there are lots of well priced campsites and hotels and you also have easy access to the Adriatic Sea. At the end of the spit is Punta Sabbioni, and from here you can take a ferry to Venice. The journey is very scenic, as it its way through the various islands of the lagoon and offering some lovely vistas. Venice itself was busy and full of tourists from all over the world, even out of season when we visited. We had a look inside St. Mark's Basilica and at the famous Rialto Bridge. Then we spent a lovely day wandering through the backstreets for a few hours, looking at gondolas, crossing bridges and eating delicious ice-cream. FIND OUT MORE |
