EAR OF DIONYSIUS
Close to the Greek Theatre of Syracuse, and set within the same area of archaeological ruins, is the fascinating Ear of Dionysius or "Orecchio di Dionisio". The 'Ear' is a limestone cave shaped like a giant teardrop. If you stand in the cave and make even the tiniest noise, the sound is amplified all around you. The cave was originally dug as a water storage area for nearby Syracuse. However, the legend of the cave says that it was used as a prison, and that its shape and acoustics made it possible for any captor to overhear the prisoners talking, no matter how quietly they talked. In the area around the cave, there are lots of other interesting limestone formations and rocks, that your children will enjoy playing in and around. There are also some Roman ruins that you can walk around and explore as well. FIND OUT MORE |
