BRANDENBURG GATE
The Brandenburg Gate is an impressive neo-classical triumphal arch, built in the 18th century. It is close to the Reichstag, which houses the German Parliament (or Bundestag) and also to the Holocaust Memorial. All three sights are within easy walking distance of each other. Over the years, the Brandenburg Gate has been the location of many major historical events, and it was used by the Nazis as a symbol of the party. We recounted the history of the Second World, and its aftermath, to the children during our visit to this area of Berlin. (Luckily their dad is a bit of an expert on German history.) There is a handy area of grass close by, in front of the Reichstag, where you can sit and eat a picnic in fine weather. You can also visit the stunning glass dome of the Reichstag, although you will need to make sure that you register in advance for your visit. FIND OUT MORE |
