ISOLA BELLA
Just off a beach in Taormina, on the north east coast of Sicily, is the gorgeous Isola Bella (beautiful island). The island is also known as 'The Pearl of the Ionian Sea', and when you visit it is not hard to see why! Although the Google map below makes it look like you might need to swim to the island, you can walk across to it via a short causeway (although you might get a bit wet). The beach here is pebbles rather than sand, but it is still a beautiful spot to sit and enjoy the warm Sicilian sunshine. The island used to be privately owned, but it was bought by the Region of Sicily in 1990 and turned into a nature reserve. You can park just across the road and make the short walk down to the beach. There are lots of restaurants and hotels around the beach. Taormina itself sits on a rocky outcrop above the beach. It is not far from the beach to the cable car that you can ride up to Taormina.
