THE VAN GOGH MUSEUM
The Van Gogh Museum is a must visit for any trip to Amsterdam. The Museum is handily situated in Museumsplein, close to the Rijksmuseum and the i amsterdam sign. The paintings are displayed chronologically, so that you get the sense of how dark Van Gogh's early works were, and how different his early style was, compared to his later, vivid and light filled paintings. The first smaller room contains his earlier paintings and this contrasts beautifully with the second larger room full of colour. Our children were fascinated by the fact that Van Gogh painted so many pictures, and yet he only sold one painting during his lifetime. We saw a lot of art during our Road School trip - both in art galleries, and in museums - seeing works of art in real life is such a different experience to seeing images of them in a book.
