CANAL BOAT TOUR
You can't really visit Amsterdam and not go on a canal boat trip (although my partner ducked out on the basis that he had done it before, and canals are really smelly). You can catch a canal boat from various locations in the city - we caught ours from the Damrak near Amsterdam Centraal Station. The view of the city is totally different from a canal boat, because you are below the bustling streets. The children were fascinated to learn about the history of the canal side houses, with their hooks to lift goods up to the top. They also noted how different architecturally Amsterdam was, to the kind of houses that they know in the UK. This page is fascinating on the architecture of Amsterdam. Although we stayed at a campsite when we went to Amsterdam on our Road School trip, it is also possible to book to actually stay in a houseboat for your visit. You can find houseboats available for short term let on various hotel booking websites (e.g. www.hotels.com). FIND OUT MORE |
