GRANDI NAVI VELOCI
During our Road School adventures we drove the length of Italy, to get to Sicily. However, the Italian roads are full of holes in places, so we decided to give our poor car tyres a break on the way back up by taking a boat. One of the Grandi Navi Veloci routes goes from Palermo in Sicily, all the way to Genoa on the Italian mainland, which saved us an awful lot of driving. The company name literally translates as 'Big Fast Boats' which the children thought was hilarious. The crossing from Palermo to Genoa takes 21 hours, so we booked a cabin to rest in while we were on board. The cars are parked out on deck rather than in the hull like on a cross channel ferry. The boat goes past Sardinia and Corsica on the way up, so it's a lovely scenic route. The Grandi Navi company has routes between lots of different Italian ports - it's a great way to get around!
