SYRACUSE
Syracuse is on the far south eastern tip of Sicily, and because of its location it was strongly influenced by the Greeks. It was also the birthplace of Archimedes. Syracuse is a beautiful coastal town, and there is some beautiful Greek archaeology in the area for visitors to admire. The town was particularly important in ancient times, as one of the major powers in the Mediterranean Sea. The centre of the town is laid out in a grid pattern, and it is full of pretty shops, restaurants and buildings. It's not easily accessible by car, unless you are a resident, so park at one of the car parks on the outskirts of town and walk into the centre. At the far end of the town is a fort that we had hoped to visit, but which was unfortunately shut when we were there. FIND OUT MORE |
