HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL
The Holocaust Memorial, is more properly known as the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. The Memorial is made up of 2,711 concrete slabs, of different shapes and sizes and it is located in the centre of Berlin, very close to the Brandenburg Gate. The slabs are on a sloping site, set out in a grid pattern, so you are drawn downwards towards the centre of the Memorial. Our children quickly disappeared into the maze of slabs to explore it. The design is meant to create an uneasy, confusing atmosphere, to represent a supposedly ordered system that has lost touch with human reason, echoing the horrors of facism, Nazism and the terrible events of the Second World War. It certainly succeeds in doing this. The Memorial is a curiously touching and unusual piece of public sculpture. It was only completed relatively recently, because it took a long time for the city to overcome various objections. The Memorial was inaugurated in 2005, 60 years after the end of World War 2.
