THE COLOSSEUM
If you're visiting Rome, you simply have to visit The Colosseum. The site is perfectly situated, next to the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. On a hot day (of which there are many in Rome), bear in mind that there is not much shade at any of these attractions, so pack a hat and lots of drinks. It's amazing to think that the Colosseum is almost 2,000 years old. Although sections of it are in a state of disrepair, and when we visited there was scaffolding on parts of the exterior, you can still really get the sense of how it would have felt to sit and watch the gladiators do combat with each other, and with wild animals as well. From the walkways around the seating areas, you can see down into the underground section where the animals were kept. You can also buy an additional ticket that allows you to visit the underground sections of the building. If your children are looking for Rome related souvenirs, there is a great shop at the Colosseum, which had a great range of books on Rome and its history, in a range of languages including English. The shop also sells coins and other Rome/Roman related items. FIND OUT MORE |
