ROMAN FORUM
At the foot of the Palatine Hill lies a large square or plaza, known as the Roman Forum. The Roman Forum is the site of many stunning columns, temples, arches and doorways still standing from Roman times. The Forum was originally a kind of marketplace, at the centre of Rome, where processions, speeches and commerce all took place. Although technically they are ruined, the buildings are still incredibly impressive. Huge columns tower above you into the Rome skyline. You can wander around the plaza, marvelling at the architecture of the past. The Temple of Saturn, of which only the front portico remains, is the oldest sacred place in Rome, with origins dating back to 498 BC. The Palatine Hill, the Roman Forum and the Colosseum are all within easy walking distance of each other, and so this area makes an ideal place to start any tour of Rome. There is not much in the way of shade in the Forum, so if it's a hot day (which it often is in Italy) make sure to take a hat and water. FIND OUT MORE |
